Claude Monet

  Oscar Claude Monet was an amazing artist.  Monet was born November 14, 1840 in Paris, France.  He began drawing lessons as a child and began selling caricatures by the age of 17.  Monet was the second son of Claude Adolphe Monet and Louise Justine Aubree Monet.  At 20 years old, Claude Monet was baptized in the local parish church.  Monet died from lung cancer on December 5, 1926 in Giverny, France at the age of 86.   

  At the age of 30, Claude Monet married Camille Doncieux on June 28, 1870.  Monet and Camille had their first son, Jean Monet, in 1867 and they had their second son, Michel, on March 17, 1878.  Camille died on September 5, 1879 at the young age of thirty-two from tuberculosis.  Monet painted Camille on her death bed.  July 1892, Monet married his second wife, Alice, who died in 1911.  Tragically, Monet’s oldest son, Jean, also died in 1914.

  Claude Monet was an impressionist.  Monet loved painting in his garden in Giverny, France.  His gorgeous garden had a water garden and a japanese style bridge with many beautiful flowers.  Monet loved painting what he knew best like water lilies, haystacks, gardens, and people.  He used his wives and children as models for his love of painting.  In 1923, Claude Monet was nearly blind, but that did not stop him from painting.  Using light and its effects on color made Monet a founder of French impressionist painting.

Rome

  There is a legend about Rome’s beginning.  By the lovely Tiber River on the Palatine Hill, which had much traffic and trade, there were two brothers, Remus and Romulus.  The young boys were rescued by a radiant wolf.  When they were older, they built a city in honor of the wolf. Unfortunately, they fought barbarically over the boundaries of their power.  Remus was killed. Romulus became king. The beautiful city was named Rome.

  Rome separated into three classes, the rich patricians, plebeians, which were ordinary citizens, and the slaves. Since slaves, who were not considered citizens, were treated very cruelly, they did most of the hard labor. Only Roman citizens were allowed to vote and join the army.  Wealthy patricians were not allowed to marry plebeians and a person must be born into being a patrician. No matter how hard plebeians worked they could never earn the title of patrician.  Eventually, plebeians gained the equal rights of patricians.  Citizenship was desired by all.

  There were many stages in the Roman government.  After Romulus, Rome was controlled by six kings.  Eventually, kingship was run out of Rome.  The Roman consul soon began.  One of these consuls was Julius Caesar.  His rule did not last long because  Senators, who were prominent citizens, killed him.  Emperors took over and the Senate did not have much power.  Rome fell in A.D.  476.

 

Tadpole

   

This Tuesday, Cassie, Ray, Olivia, Mom, and I went to Irvine Regional Park to catch tadpoles and caterpillars.  There was a stream and mom had her good boots on and Cassie had to carry her across, which it was hilarious.  Too bad we didn’t have a camera with us.  I caught three tadpoles, Cassie caught three tadpoles, mom and Olivia caught like ten tadpoles (with Casie's help), and Ray caught... (pause for dramatic affect)... ONE tadpole, isn’t that amazing, ONE tadpole.  There is only only two still living.  Tadpole update to come at a later date.

We have a lot of caterpillars.  They have survived so far.  We are still not sure if they will make it.  Caterpillar update to come at a later date.

Napolean Bonaparte

  Napolean Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769.  His mother was Letizia Ramolino and his father was Carlo Buonaparte.  Napolean was born into a noble Italian ancestry and was raised in a Roman Catholic family.  He was trained as an artillery officer in France.  Napolean Bonaparte died at the age of fifty-one on May 5, 1821.  Many people believed Napolean was poisoned, but it was later found that he died due to stomach bleeding or cancer.  

  Napolean Bonaparte married his wife, Josephine de Beauharnais, on March 9, 1796, when he was twenty-six and she was thirty-two years old.  Napolean adopted Josephine’s young son Eugene, but she was unable to provide him a son of his own.  At forty years old, Napolean divorced his wife Josephine de Beauharnais, and was later remarried to Marie Louise of Austria.  Marie Louise and Napolean had a son, Napolean Francois Joseph Charles Bonaparte II, who would eventually give an heir to Napolean’s throne.  

  In 1804, Napolean Bonaparte crowned himself and was announced Emperor of the French.  He ruled as emperor from 1804 to 1815.  On October 21, 1805, the French and Spanish navies were defeated by the British navy at the Battle of Trafalgar.  Napolean established the “Continental System,” in 1806, that forbid any British goods to any European country.  Napolean followed this event with many victories and controlled most of continental Europe from 1909 to 1811.  But, in 1814 Paris and Napolean lost a series of important battles.  He abdicated his throne in 1815.
